Pittsburgh, PA… On Wednesday, November 8, 2017, the PWSA Board of Directors approved a contract with CWM Environmental, a NELAC certified (National Environmental Accreditation Certification) water testing laboratory and consulting firm with locations in Kittanning, PA and Cleveland, OH. CWM will provide onsite management and supervisory functions at PWSA’s lab, as well as deliver a critical reinstatement of PWSA’s certifications to conduct and expand onsite analytical testing.
“Bringing CWM’s team in to support PWSA’s laboratory functions will reinforce and expand our internal capability to monitor our water quality and ensure compliance. CWM key staff will fill senior technical roles and train PWSA’s staff to expand our analytical capabilities,” stated Robert Weimar, PWSA’s Interim Executive Director. “We envision CWM building PWSA’s internal capability and capacity to more efficiently use of our existing laboratory resources, help our staff increase our ability to deliver the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) performance tests that we need, and to effectively improve PWSA’s WTP laboratory and staff capability to meet regulatory water quality and compliance standards.”
CWM will submit additional applications for Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) certification to expand PWSA’s chemical and biological test capability and capacity within six months of the contract start date. This work includes developing standard operating procedures that meet PADEP requirements for a Quality Assurance/Quality Control program. Once the certification process is completed, CWM will fill technical lab analyst positions with expertise in metals, wet bench, and microbiology testing, as well as train PWSA’s existing staff to satisfy the requirements.
David Kohl, CEO of CWM says, “By helping PWSA improve the quality of long-term operations and obtain PADEP certification, PWSA will be better able to ensure the public safety of its drinking water.”
PWSA’s partnership with CWM will be in place for two years at an annual amount of $500,000. CWM’s work will restore and optimize the capabilities of PWSA’s Laboratory to support PWSA’s WTP staff and directly improve their ability to deliver safe and clean water.
“Providing our customers with safe and reliable drinking water is the highest priority for the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority,” stated PWSA Board Chair Debbie Lestitian. “We are committed to building internal capacity throughout the PWSA organization to ensure that the Pittsburgh community is served by the fully capable water supply, treatment, and delivery organization that our customers expect and deserve.”
