PWSA Unveils New Water Usage Portal for Customers
Custom digital alerts can keep you informed about your water consumption

Pittsburgh, PA - The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) is encouraging customers to sign up for its free Customer Usage Portal, a tool that helps customers track their water usage and receive alerts when there is a spike in consumption. The portal uses our advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technology to display daily water consumption updates online.


PWSA has used AMI technology for several years to exchange data with water meters frequently and remotely. Each of PWSA’s water customers has a meter that tracks usage, typically located in the basement. That meter is wired to a transponder placed on the outside of a building. The transponder communicates via radio frequency with receivers placed on elevated PWSA infrastructure, such as water towers. That information is then transmitted to PWSA, so we can accurately apply water usage to our bills. The Customer Usage Portal allows our customers to see this same data that our billing professionals do.



“PWSA Customer Service has significantly improved response times, we have upgraded our telephone system to make contacting Customer Service and obtaining answers easier, and we are providing continuous training to improve the level of service our customers are receiving,” said Executive Director Robert A. Weimar.


“Now, customers can track their usage and better understand their bill thanks to the hard work of our AMI team, who have been analyzing data and upgrading meters throughout our service area,” he said.


In addition to the online dashboard, customers can set thresholds to receive text message or email alerts when their water usage is higher than their average consumption. Customers can also add multiple users to receive alerts so that an entire household, or tenants of a rental property, can be aware of their water consumption.


The information required for enrollment is located on PWSA’s monthly bill, and instructions for accessing the Customer Usage Portal are available at under the “Usage Alerts” tab. Customers who need assistance can call PWSA Customer Service at 412-255-2423.
