Pittsburgh, PA – This spring, the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority will invest $1.8 million to reconstruct water and sewer infrastructure located within the paved public right-of-way on Fuchsia Way, which serves parts of Race and Monticello Streets.
This project is the result of a productive community conversation that began last summer and required ongoing coordination with residents, Pittsburgh United, and local officials. The data gathered from residents through a community survey and information provided during one-on-one conversations has informed the project and was considered as part of our evaluation of the overall water and sewer infrastructure within the project area.
The design and approach to addressing these long-standing issues were presented at a community meeting on March 23rd where residents had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the project. We will continue to engage with residents as construction progresses to provide ongoing project updates, answer questions, and continually address neighborhood concerns related to our infrastructure.
As part of this project, PWSA will replace the sewer and water mains located within Fuchsia Way as shown in the figure above. The Wilkinsburg-Penn Joint Water Authority (WPJWA) will also replace the water main located within their service area. Water and sewer service will be maintained during the project without interruption.
The full scope of work is as follows:
- Full reconstruction of sewer main, manholes, and catch basins
- Partial replacement of private sewer laterals as determined by replacement authorizations
- Full replacement of PWSA and WPJWA water mains
- Replacement of lead service lines as identified
- Restoration of street and any impacted sidewalks
“As we near closer to construction, we would like to thank our partners in the community for their feedback and advocacy,” said Chief Executive Officer, Will Pickering. “These types of investment are integral to our mission to support our region by protecting public health and the environment with a commitment to equity and future generations.”
Construction of the project is expected to begin in April and continue through September of this year. The contract, awarded to M. O’Herron Company, allocates 17.6 percent ($348,250) of the nearly $2 million total to disadvantaged businesses, which meets our Supplier Diversity Program goals. WPJWA is responsible for funding the work to occur within their service area.
