Pittsburgh, PA - On Monday, October 24, the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) will begin water main work on Fifth Avenue in the Point Breeze North neighborhood. During these upgrades, construction crews from Frank J. Zottola Construction, Inc. will connect a new water main on McPherson Boulevard to the existing water distribution system on Fifth Avenue.
PWSA coordinated with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) to minimize traffic disruptions during this essential construction work.
Construction crews will work during the night, from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, until work is complete. During work hours, both northbound lanes and the southbound passing lane on Fifth Avenue will be closed between Penn Avenue and Hamilton Avenue. The southbound travel lane on Fifth Avenue will remain open. The Rainbow Street entrance and exit for the PRT East Liberty Garage and Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway will also remain open.
Flaggers and off-duty uniformed police officers will direct traffic and provide emergency vehicles and PRT buses with northbound access through the construction zone. Detour signs will be posted to direct all other northbound traffic around the work area.
After work hours, crews will plate the street and reopen Fifth Avenue to regular traffic. Night work is expected to be complete by Friday, November 4, 2022, pending weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. Complete repaving of the impacted roadway is expected to occur at a later time and is weather dependent. PWSA will continue to coordinate with PennDOT and PRT on this remaining work and will notify the public once scheduled.
This construction work is part of PWSA’s Thomas and McPherson Project, which includes water main replacements, lead service line replacements, and stormwater improvements in the Point Breeze North neighborhood. Project updates can be found at www.pgh2o.com/thomas-mcpherson.
