Employee Spotlight: Luke Smith

Meet Luke Smith, Environmental Compliance Clean Fill Specialist, and the newest member of our ever-growing Environmental Compliance team.
Luke Smith

In his role, Luke is responsible for making sure all soil generated from our construction efforts meets clean fill standards so it can be repurposed, recycled, or reused. Get to know him!

What made you decide to join our organization? Being a Pittsburgh native, I’ve always wanted to serve the city I grew up in. Using my background in watersheds and water resources, joining the team was a great way to live this goal. We play such an important role in the City’s day-to-day operations that working here allows me to give back to the place I love.

How do you contribute to the delivery of safe, clean drinking water for our communities? By ensuring the soil we excavate is clean and safe, we're able to make sure pipes will not be contaminated when they're being serviced and that no contaminated soil will be used in the backfilling process.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever heard? I’m the kind of person who loves to live in the moment and take time to make memories. One thing I would tell people is to find a moment each day that makes you happy and hold onto it.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? I live a very busy life outside of work! I co-own and operate an event DJ company, catering mostly to weddings and dances. I spend my free time biking long distances and riding with my family. My goal is to bike to D.C. within the next few years with my brother-in-law. I also compete in disc golf tournaments on free weekends and make sure to travel to a couple national tournaments every year. When all is said and done and I have absolute free time, I just like to spend quality time with people.

What was your first job? In high school, I cut lawns in my neighborhood. My first “actual” job was as a sales associate at The Family Christian Stores in West Mifflin. I worked there during winter and college breaks and eventually was the sales floor lead until the day the stores closed. In fact, I rang out the very last customer.
