In partnership with the Pittsburgh Regional Transit Bus Rapid Transit Project (BRT), Pittsburgh Water will be incorporating green infrastructure improvements within the right-of-way, focusing on the Uptown portion of the BRT. Systems will include a mix of bioretentions, bioswales, underground storage.
Progress & Status
The redesign of Forbes Avenue and Fifth Avenue will accommodate bus rapid transit from Downtown to the Birmingham Bridge. This stormwater improvements project will help slow or reduce runoff into the combined sewer system during wet weather events.
A total of 16 stormwater systems will be installed on Forbes and Fifth Avenues, between Pride Street and the Birmingham Bridge, with one system at the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Schenley Drive. Work began in June 2025 and is anticipated to be complete by end of summer 2025. Construction activities fall under Pittsburgh Regional Transit.
