Pittsburgh Water’s annual sewer rehabilitation program is a proactive means of addressing aging sewer mains and ensuring reliable service for our customers throughout the City of Pittsburgh. Work under the program involves inspection and assessment of sewers and rehabilitation primarily through the installation of trenchless pipe liners, minimizing the need for disruptive excavated repairs.
Progress & Status
The annual program consists of several individual projects targeting the sewer system in designated neighborhoods, as well as a project that addresses individual sewers in critical need of rehabilitation throughout the City. In 2025, projects were completed in the Carrick and Homewood neighborhoods, totaling over 15 miles of sewers being rehabilitated. Ongoing projects in the Knoxville, Westwood, and Perry North neighborhoods are scheduled for completion in the Spring of 2026 and account for an additional 20 miles of sewers being rehabilitated. Future projects are currently scheduled to begin in 2026 in the Sheraden, Beltzhoover, and Arlington neighborhoods.
Work typically lasts one day, from 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. You will be asked to limit your water usage during this time, as your sewer lateral will be blocked while the liner is being installed. It is also recommended that residents block their sewer trap with one gallon of water to prevent sewer-liner odors from entering their basements. Sewer traps are typically found in the floor of your basement and look like a small drain.
In advance of liner installations, Pittsburgh Water Contractors will provide door hanger notices 24-hours before work begins to residents explaining the work, the anticipated project schedule, and requesting that water usage be limited on the day of installation. Door hangers will also include contact information for project superintendents and inspectors on-site who can answer questions and address any immediate concerns with work being performed.
