As heavier and more intense rains are overwhelming our sewer system, stormwater management is a growing concern throughout Pittsburgh. With each heavy rain, sewage can overflow into rivers and streams, flood our streets, and back up into basements. Rain barrels are a way to reduce stormwater runoff, which can save you water and money. PWSA’s one-time $40 rain barrel credit is available for barrels that hold 50 gallons or more.
Barrels can be purchased at big box hardware stores, garden centers, or online. From time to time, local workshops are held that offer education and affordable rain barrels as well.
To install your rain barrel, attach it to an existing gutter and downspout, and be sure to set your barrel on a level platform of bricks or pavers. When full, a rain barrel can be very heavy. A soaker or sprinkler hose can be attached to the barrel’s overflow valve. Use the water for the garden or cleaning and remember that water from the rain barrel is non-potable, meaning you shouldn’t drink or cook with it.
Once you’ve installed your rain barrel, head to our website to fill out and submit your rain barrel credit application. To earn the credit, you’ll need to include photos of the barrel installed and in good working order.
To apply for the credit, fill out our convenient online form.
