Water Wise: Neat streets, protected sewers, clean rivers

Stormwater runoff can pick up dirt, chemicals, and pollutants and carry them to our rivers and streams. Help keep our streets and waterways clean by following a few of our quick tips.
Street sweeping vehicle

Streets carry more than just vehicles. Stormwater runoff can pick up dirt, chemicals, and pollutants and carry them to waterways, harming wildlife and impairing our sewers. Follow these tips to keep our streets neat:

  • If you park on the street, check your car for leaks. Even small oil or fluid leaks can contaminate stormwater.
  • During street sweeping hours, avoid parking on the street. Street sweeping is essential for keeping storm drains clear and functioning. Street sweeping is April 1 through November 30.
  • Dispose of household chemicals and paints according to label instructions. Never dump them in alleys, on sidewalks, or in the street.
  • Avoid hosing off sidewalks to prevent dirt or pet waste from entering the system.
  • Practice leave-no-trace ethics everywhere you go, and dispose of trash in a proper container, never in the street or a storm drain.
  • Never drop cigarette butts on the ground.
