A look at current and upcoming projects.
As the warmer months settle in, construction activity will ramp up across our service area. Our crews and contractors are hard at work maintaining and renewing critical components of our water, sewer, and stormwater infrastructure and preparing for upcoming projects.
From Water Reliability Plan (WRP) projects to water main replacements to sewer rehabilitation, here's a look at the projects currently in motion and those on the horizon.
In Construction
The Highland Reservoir Pump Station , the first new building to be constructed in Pittsburgh Water's service area in 20 years, takes shape
- Water Main Replacements: Upon completion, replaced water mains will provide more reliable water services to our customers. The final stages of these projects are ongoing in Brighton Heights and Squirrel Hill South. All water mains have been replaced; only street and sidewalk restoration remains.
- Highland Reservoir Pump Station: As part of the WRP, Pittsburgh Water is constructing a new pump station within the vicinity of Highland Park. Upon completion, the new facility will have an increased pumping capacity and will serve as a redundant supply to both our reservoirs in the neighborhood. The project is on schedule for substantial completion in late 2025.
- Moore Park, Vannucci Field Stormwater Partnership: In partnership with PennDOT, Pittsburgh Water is undertaking two stormwater improvement projects to reduce the amount of sediment runoff in the Saw Mill Run Watershed. Construction is taking place in Moore Park and Vannucci Park in Brookline and Beechview, respectively.
- Carroll Street Sewer Project: Pittsburgh Water will replace a portion of a 24-inch sewer on Carroll Street in Bloomfield.
- 2025 Streambank Restoration Project: As part of our Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) compliance, we’re restoring streambanks along Glass Run Road in Hays Woods. The project includes restoration of an unnamed tributary that leads to Chartiers Creek near Broadhead Fording Road in Fairywood.
- South Side Flats Sewer Separation Project: This project will create dedicated storm and sanitary sewers on several South Side Flats streets to ensure more reliable sewer service for our customers.
- Street and Sidewalk Restoration: Pittsburgh Water is responsible for street restoration, paving, and landscaping following construction. Restoration typically begins in the spring and will continue into the fall. Each week during paving season, we’ll post the restoration locations that are on our docket on our Concrete & Paving page.
- Braywood Way Stormwater Improvements Project: In partnership with the City of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Water recently completed stormwater and roadway improvements to address flooding issues at Braywood Way in the Greenfield and Hazelwood neighborhoods.
Planning & Future Projects
- Water Main Replacements: These projects will replace water mains in five Pittsburgh neighborhoods, providing more reliable water services to our customers. Any lead encountered during the water main replacement process will be replaced at no direct cost.
- ABC Project: A major component of the WRP, the “ABC” Project (Aspinwall Pump Station, Bruecken Pump Station, and Clearwell Bypass Project) will renew key pumping capacity and improve treatment reliability, meaning less disruptions and safer, more reliable water services. Project designs for both the Aspinwall and Bruecken Pump Stations are complete with construction slated to begin in the fall.
