PITTSBURGH, PA – Today, Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority’s Director of Engineering and Construction, Barry King, PE, PMP, is recognized in Pittsburgh Business Times as one of their 20 People to Know in Engineering, along with inclusion in the Special Engineers’ Week Awards issue.
Barry King has been Director of Engineering and Construction in interim and then permanent capacity since June of 2016. King manages the daily design and construction of PWSA’s infrastructure projects, as well as coordinating Department of Engineering and Construction staff and consultant activities.
King’s 27 years of experience culminates with the construction of the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority’s Water Reliability Plan – a series of once-in-a-generation projects to strengthen our water system. King has ultimate oversight of the Water Reliability Plan and the consent order that established the design and need for the Plan.
Water Reliability Plan
King maintains that The Water Reliability Plan is the most memorable engineering project he has been involved in to date. The series of eight critical projects will restore large components of our water pumping and distribution systems that were built at the turn of the 20th century.
The first seven projects consist of the rehabilitation of a major pump station, replacement of a second major pump station, construction of a third large pump station, rehabilitations of two water storage reservoirs, construction of multiple large-diameter rising and supply mains, and the construction of a bypass around the existing Water Treatment Plant Clearwell. These projects must be completed before the existing Clearwell (a large, century-old water storage facility that is critical to the operations of PWSA’s entire system) can be taken offline and replaced.
These projects are a $300 million investment to strengthen our water system, add redundancy and provide for an uninterrupted supply of safe, quality drinking water.
