Clearwell Replacement

In Planning Water Reliability Plan

The Clearwell is a 44-million gallon basin that plays a key role in the water treatment process. This component of the system is reaching the end of its useful life and must be replaced. The suite of Water Reliability Plan projects will lay the necessary groundwork to take the Clearwell offline. This project will replace the Clearwell structure with a new one, complete with bypasses and other modern fixtures to ensure reliable water service for the future.

Pittsburgh Water awarded the design contract for this centerpiece Water Reliability Plan project in July 2024 to CDM Smith, Inc. The design requires geotechnical investigations, soil samples, historical document review, and a thorough hydraulic analysis. The existing Clearwell must be demolished to make way for the new structure. Design consultants will be tasked with preparing a safe and effective plan for demolition. They must also design a modern, redundant Clearwell that can maintained without interruption of the water treatment process.
