The Southside Flats Sewer Separation Project looks to create dedicated storm and sanitary sewers on several South Side Flats streets to ensure more reliable sewer service for our customers.
Progress & Status
Limited construction activities have begun on and around S. 19th Street, including manhole installation and small sewer repairs. This work will be completed in approximately mid-July. Crews will then continue sewer work on S. 18th Street and Wharton Street.
This portion of the sewer system is currently “combined,” which means the pipes carry both stormwater and sewage, which can lead to overtaxed pipes during heavy stormwater events. Too much sewer flow during heavy rains can cause basement backups, overland flooding, and polluted waterways in our region.
As the construction team designates a new sewer just for stormwater, we will connect all properties with splashing downspouts and extend storm laterals to the edge of the roadway for remaining properties. We will also replace any lead service lines found within the project area as part of the American Rescue Act-funded Neighborhood Lead Line Replacement Program.
